We do most of our field work in the Cape Maclear region of southern Lake Malawi.
Dr. Kocher first worked here in 1980. Not much has changed in Chembe village over the years.
To study these fish you need to SCUBA dive! The fish don't generally mind being watched, and we are able to study the feeding and breeding behavior of the fish in detail. Using SCUBA we are also able to selectively capture fish for study, minimizing disturbance to the community.
For big trips around the lake we rent a larger diesel-powered boat. It is very convenient to anchor over the dive site and be able to sleep on the boat!
Sunsets at Cape Maclear are spectacular!
